Celebrating

We had several things to celebrate in past month.

The girls helped me make a birthday celebration in their Grandpa's honor:

We joined in on the 15th of September to celebrate el patria:

We celebrated my Dad again, on the third anniversary of his passing by making a fancy Peking Duck dinner:
And we accompanied my brother in law to formally ask for his fiance's hand in marriage with all of her family:

Hope your families are celebrating each other whenever they can!

The view from up here

The girls and I are loving finally living in our own house!! We owe you a "pictures of where we live now" post, but in the meantime - a snacktime view.

The girls must still be American, they enjoy people watching as much as I do. I tried to explain "people watching" once to the inlaws and they just asked "why?".

The bonus picture is of the super vicious neighborhood gang. It is always the same group of dogs, I swear! Maybe they are siblings ;) Let's stick with gang members, that sounds more interesting.

What about you? Have you found any habits of yours (like people watching) that are unexplainable to people here?

Lesson learned

Leaving a 20 month old with my suegro for 45.7 seconds while I run to the restroom is NOT the same as leaving her with my suegra.

Our conversation when I returned from the bathroom went a little like this....

Me: "mami, sunscreen is not to drink!"
A: "chapstick?"
Me: "no mami, this isnt chapstick, this is sunscreen" ( as I frantically try and wipe the sunscreen out of her mouth...)
A: "mama, thirsty"
Me: "are you thirsty because you drank drank sunscreen?"
A: "agua, all gone!"
Me: "you drank sunscreen because you finished your water?"
A: "si."

Ok, that makes it so much better. At least you were problem solving.

We both learned a lesson- sunscreen isnt to drink and babies arent to be left with the suegro.

(Seriously speaking, he is great with the girls and they adore him. Except for this one sunscreen drinking incident LOL)

No Holly Jolly Christmas for us

Ok, so that is exagerating just a bit.

All I wanted forChristmas was to spend it in our own home, just the FOUR of us. With our homemade stockings, my Dads old christmas tree and ornaments and fresh baked cookies for Santa Claus.

Luis wants our builder, who thought he was finished this past monday, to rip out the ENTIRE TILED FLOOR. 103 square meters of the pretty wood tile needs to be taken out and redone. It took the guy 4 days to install it all. To take it all out ( without breaking any tiles!) it will take..... 2 weeks? Minimum?

I dont know who I am more irritated with... The guy who installed it or Luis who didnt notice WEEKS ago when that part of the tile was done that he didnt like how it turned out.

We were supposed to move in around December 16th.

Well. We can forget that idea.

Off to pout.

Celebrating 25 blog followers!

Just noticed, the blog has 25 followers!

Call me a dork, but it made my day. I started this blog to keep family and friends up to date back home on our lives here in Mexico City. With two young ones, I figured people would enjoy seeing pictures and reading anecdotes about their mischevious behavior. Also, I figured family back home would enjoy reading all the positive experiences we are having in our new home and also really enjoy realizing we hadnt been kidnapped for ransom by a cartel member ;)

It is hard to see from the States, how normal and content a family can be living here in Mexico. The media only runs stories that make good headlines. Of course they don't run "Toddler Girl Makes Friends With Old Guy at Market and Recieves Free Bubble Wand" or "Baby Learnes To Do Headstands in Hotel in Acapulco" or "American Woman Gorges Herself on Fresh Fruit Daily and Loses 40 Pounds in 4 Months" . Those headlines don't sell papers or bring more viewers. They are however, much closer to the truth for our life here in Mexico.

After I started blogging little stories and thoughts on our life here, I somehow stumbled onto other blogs of expats here in Mexico. There are tons of families who have relocated to Mexico (and other countries). Some with young families, some as retirees, some as young adults. Some willingly, some forcibly, some temporarily, and some permanently. I love reading their stories on how life is normal, different, the same, scary, exciting, relaxing, stressful, new... And everything else under the sun.

In honor of all 25 of the blogs followers, I would love to hear from you on what brings you here, or what you have in common with us, or just a hello! I know who the first two followers are, family members from back home M and S . :)

Thanks for tuning in for our stories!

PS the 2.5 year old just informed me she is going to work. Those are broken sunglasses she is wearing. In her purse are 6 markers and 2 spoons. Just what you need to go to work, right?

You call our house

The phone may be answered by my 2.5 yr old.

Se has been practicing her phone manners, and this is what she has down so far

(imagine it in a teeny tiny toddler voice)

"Bueno?"

"Estas?"

"Bien."

(as in " Bueno? como estas? Estoy bien" )

When prompted she will also add "haces?" (as in "que haces¿" at the end.

Eeeeeee so cute my sweet toddler !!

(ok, so all toddlers are cute but Im partial to mine)

How long will it take

For my inlaws to believe Im not packing up and running back to the states?

Im not upset (anymore) , I just find it a little humourous. I recently blogged that we are returning to the States for a weeklong visit (just me and the girls). My suegra told Papi that she doent think I will be returning to Mexico.

Um, yes. Because I packed up our entire life and moved my family across an international border on a whim and after 2.5 months Im done. Because I want my children to live without their father. Because I want to live with mi vida, mi amor. Because I brought all MY belongings (and lots of things that were my fathers) and things special to my family - but Ill just leave that here because I dont have the juevos to tell everyone Im ditching ship.

Believe me, if I were returning to the States permanently you would know it. And your son would be coming with us.

I did bring it up with her yestday, by slying asking her what I should bring everyone back as little gifts. She admitted she didnt think we were coming back and I simply told her "Tu hijo no puede vivir sinmigo, y sus hijas no pueden vivir sin el" which is probably the incorrect way to say "Your son cant live without me and his daughters cant live without him" . She smiled and laughed, but I find many people here smile or laugh when they dont want to argue. I have found (in the short two months) that people avoid conflict as much as possible and often smile instead of arguing.

Anyone else have "non believers" they have had to contend with?

PS Im really not upset anymore , but I cant help pondering why she/they dont believe the girls and I are capable of living here? Its not THAT diffent from the States.

When I moved to MX

I had NO clue I would be thanking mt lucky stars for my inlaws. Mostly my suegra (MIL) and "cunis" (cuñada or SIL) .

Its amazing. I knew I did everything when it came to the girls, and it (usually) didnt bother me. What I didnt realize is its REALLY nice to have someone else hold your kid for 10 minutes. Or to have them feed them so you can eat a meal in peace. Or, like tonight, when your 9 month old ball of fire decides sleep is for the dead.... After listening to her cry off and on for 3 hours because she doesnt want to sleep.... You can give up, get up out of bed and hand her off to someone else. So instead of crying (which I was seriously on the verge of) you can make yourself some hot tea with canela while someone else deals with your hyper Chuckie child who wont sleep.

Maybe someone snuck her a Payaso when I wasn't looking? That goes great with a breastmilk and only "natural" foods diet, right? Chocolate covered marshmallow on a stick.

I wonder if her cousin (also an "A" baby, practically the same age) is ALSO wide awake. Hey cousin A , are you wide awake too? Its 12:42am here in MX, what it is 1:42 am there ? Lets have an international baBAY parTAY!
