We had several things to celebrate in past month.
The girls helped me make a birthday celebration in their Grandpa's honor:
We joined in on the 15th of September to celebrate el patria:
We celebrated my Dad again, on the third anniversary of his passing by making a fancy Peking Duck dinner:
And we accompanied my brother in law to formally ask for his fiance's hand in marriage with all of her family:
Hope your families are celebrating each other whenever they can!
Our family of four moved to Mexico City, Mexico in January of 2012. Follow our experience here as a family of Americans and chilangos living life in this huge city, where we miss our American ways but learn to love new ones.

"Funny how a melody.....
"...can bring back a memory!"
Today made a recipe my dad used to make alot, hadn't made it since he passed away 2.5 years ago. Went outside to check something and walked back into my suegras house.....
And was felt like I was back in my Dad's house, waiting to eat his baked chicken legs with honey and soy sauce (among other super secret ingredients). I could even see him knealing at the oven , turning the legs with his tongs.
And this time, I just smiled at the thought of him.
Anyone else have any smell related memories of a loved one?

Breaking my heart
Ay, sweet Sing-Sing. How do you do it?
Her grandpa passed away just two weeks shy of her first birthday. How telling is it that she still talks about him and knows what songs he played on the guitar?
Just now she was playing with the (unplugged) phone. She called first her Uncle R (in the US), then her Tia J (here in MX). Then, she had a converstion that went like this:
"Bueno, Grandpa? Como Estas? (You want to) Come visit Abuelita house? (You want to come) see me? (On a) Plane? Ok. Ok. Si. "
My mother in law always asks me if I am living with sort of a mirage of my Dad still living. Since I am so far away , she says, is it easier to pretend he is still living, working, growing hot chili plants on his deck?
I wish I could pretend that. Unfortunately my memory is a little but better than my three year olds and my imagination a little more lacking. At least I find comfort that he lives on in her imagination. We continue to kiss his photo at bedtime and I can *almost* make it halfway through the song Hotel California on the radio before starting to cry.
And before the tears even start to flow, there is sweet Sing-Sing telling me from her carseat -
"Don't cry mami. Sing! Grandpa song."

Why This Year's 4th of July
was a sobfest for me.
The last picture taken of my daddy. Last Fourth of July, holding his only grandchild (at the time, Baby A was a twinkle in our eyes) and standing next to his oldest child (that's me). Smiling in spite of battling the lung cancer that took his life in September. I know that the first year of holidays after you lose someone you love is supposed to be rough, but I didn't expect the 4th of July to be so hard.
It was actually worse than Father's Day- I only cried twice on Father's Day. I think the reason behind it is this : I can't remember my Dad's recipe for ice cream. I can still see his hands wiping the rock salt off the ice cream container as it chruned on the back porch, throwing the bags of ice on the deck and pounding them with the flat side of an axe to crush the ice, bringing the container inside when it was frozen and placing the container in the sink. Pulling out the whisk that was inside the container, and even which spatula he always used to scrape the ice cream off that whisk. The one with the whtie handle and an off white rubber head.
But I can't remember the recipe? Half and Half, milk, vanilla and what else? Eggs? He said he used to make it with eggs and cook it on the stove when we were little, but did he still use eggs? He didn't cook it first, I know that.
It just makes me feel like the worst daughter in the world. What else have I forgotten? Was I not paying enough attention? The entire time he was here, 24.5 years of my life, did I not listen to anything? It makes me wish I could reqwind time and record every moment with him on tape, so I can rewind to those moments when my memory fails me. Or to when I failed to listen closely. I can't even count the number of times we made ice cream together, and I still can't remember the recipe!
Dad was a good American, patriotic yet informed about politics and news. He took these pictures of Toddler C last year:
I didn't even make the girls dresses, like I did for Big Girl C last year. Why? Because Dad isn't here to say "Wow, I can't believe you made that! It looks like it could be from a store! You are getting so good at this." Other people compliment my sewing , but it isn't the same as a fathers approval. Then I cried because I started thinking Dad would have wanted me to make them dresses to celebrate the Fourth. And cried because we left late to go see fireworks, and got there in time but I didn't take a blanket for the girls to sit on . And cried because I forgot the baby bug spray for Toddler Girl C, so I just sprayed the adult spray on her shoes and shirt, and she got 4 or 5 bites anyway. Dad would have had that stuff packed in the car in the morning or afternoon, ready to roll.
The worst part? We had store bought ice cream, which sucks because Dad didn't make it.
